Ernie is too clever for his own good sometimes. I can never be annoyed at him for too long.Friends often say the reason he does things, is because I laugh at him. He makes me laugh, he makes me feel good, he makes me want to tear my hair out. No matter what he does I will always love our precious Sir Ernest Humpalot.

I left bread on the top of the fence for the birds. He went around the fence, tried to get under, tried to climb the fence ...nothing worked. About an hour later a friend was visiting and we heard a noise. We looked out the window to see Ernie pushing a garden chair to the fence, climb on it and try to get the birds bread.

Another day when visiting a friend we decided to make the most of the lovely day and sit outside. I happened to look in the window. Oh my  Ernie.....Ernie was standing on the dining table trying to eat the dried fruit that was in the wall decoration.
I stopped him that time, but after several attempts at climbing chairs without being caught he managed to destroy it another day.

If only he would put as much effort into recall as he does mischief.

Ernie is very strong and when he puts his mind to something nothing is going to change it. I can usually plant my feet and hang on to do a bit of grass surfing, but when water is involved I quickly learned to let the lead go or I would be swimming too. On several occassions he didn't have to drag me, but he still had me in the water.

On a lovely walk around the water front he decided to jump off the wharf. I hung on as long as I could, but that long drop to the sea wasn't for me so I let go. Several hours later and with the help of 3 men Ernie and a very embarrased me managed to climb out of the water and walk for miles like drowned rats back to the car.

After Erns was diganosed with IBD the vets told me to be very careful about not letting him eat anything other than his food. We knew it would not be easy with a Labradors love of food, but Erns went to lengths none of us would expect from a dog. After a walk around riental Bay we were standing at the crossing on the way back to the car. Erns was sitting nicely and a woman at the light s remarked what a lovely dog and isn't he obedient. He often fooled people who looked at his big brown eyes and thought what an obedient dog. Each time people said this I am sure I see Erns wink saying our little secret.

I was busy listening to the womaning so wasn't paying attention to Erns. Not that most people need to watch their dogs, but Erns isn't like every other dog.  I felt a tug on the lead and look down to see  Ernie had his head in her bag.I tried to pull his lead to get his head out, but he wasn't taking his head from that bag. I leaned down to pull  his head when I saw he was eating something. Trying to get food off a Lab is next to impossible and Erns wasn't letting this prize go. I was embarrassed and apologising as I tried to get what ever he  had while he danced around trying to swallow it with the wrapping. The woman thought it was the funniest thing and told me she wouldn't eat the ham sandwich anyway.

I bought Ernie some natural Deer Sinew powder for his hips. The little toad got into the pantry and ate the whole lot.50gms.
Of course I was worried what it might do to him and rang the vet. The nurse said she would ask the vet. I heard him say what dog.She replied" Ernie.. the deliquient black lab." I did have to smile.

The vet thought being a natural product he should be fine but I had to watch him for the rest of the night for any swelling in his joints, vomitting or anything unusual to take him in. Vet did add "anything that I thought might be unusual for another dog may not for a dog like Ernie." Wonder what that meant. (wink)

I can't leave that boy alone for 5 mins and he is up to no good.

He will get into peoples hand bags. If they aren't easy for him to get into he will chew a hole in it.
He got into a friends bag and unscrewed a large pill container with moisturising pearls and ate them.

Luckily I am not one to panic or I am sure I would have had a heat attack by now with my lovable rogue.
